The Argus: Going Out Award

The Going Out Awards

Best Restaurant - Sponsored by Carters Domestic Appliances

Anyone who has tried and failed to get a table at any of Brighton’s top restaurants on a Saturday night will know what a haven for foodies the city is.

But this category isn’t limited to the city’s best dining spots – which Sussex restaurants deserve further recognition?

We are looking not only for great food, but brilliant atmosphere and service.

THE SHORTLIST

Donatellos, Brighton Place, Brighton

THE ADDIS family have been pillars of the community in Brighton and Hove, serving high quality Italian food for more than 20 years.

Their flagship restaurant, Donatello, is one of the busiest restaurants in the city, offering customers quality Italian dishes at affordable prices.

With its Sardinian recipes and fresh, simple cooking, the restaurant continues to go from strength to strength.

Foodilic, North Street and Western Road, Brighton

In little more than five years Peter Illic’s Foodilic all-you-can eat vegan and vegetarian restaurants have become city institutions.

He opened the first outlet in North Street in 2008 and followed it up with a larger outlet in Western Road in 2013.

Though most diners visit the restaurants for healthy, creative recipes and budget prices, few can resist the famed Foodilic Feuillete – freshly-made pastries with a range of sweet and savoury fillings.

64 Degrees, Meeting House Lane

Michael Bremner has already snapped up three awards for excellence in the Brighton And Hove Food And Drink Awards 2014.

His new venture has only been open a year, but thanks to its inventive approach to layout – chefs cook right in front of diners – and non-pretentious but creative menu, critics and diners have heaped praise on the place.

One critic summed it up best with a comparison to Catalonia, “All the riotous, sexy joy of a tapas joint in backstreet Barcelona”.

Chambers Bistro, Shoreham

The family-run modern bistro on the ground floor of the beautifully restored Old Town Hall in Shoreham is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the high street.

It’s one for special occasions with a candle-lit restaurant and the owners pride themselves on creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

The chefs often use local foraged produce “from the hedgerow or from the sea” on the a la carte menu.

Flamenco, Eastbourne

With more than 46 tapas, traditional Iberian music, rustic decors and 25 Spanish wines and cavas, Flamenco is one of Sussex’s most authentic Spanish restaurants.

The menu has classic Spanish dishes as well as village specialities and regional favourites. A new deli range has everything from 30-year-old sherry to paella kits.

Nibbling on tapas is an ideal pre-theatre snack or visit for one of its popular Flamenco evenings, performed by Amor Flamenco, and the theatre is free.

AND THE WINNER IS... The Argus: Foodilic, Brighton Foodilic, Brighton

With its emphasis on healthy, fresh, well-priced and quick food, Foodilic has become the lunch destination for well-heeled city centre professionals.

The self-service buffet in its cosy North Road branch is soon to be boosted with the addition of hot dishes and favourites such as the popular feuilletés, which are served at its branch in Western Road, where you buy food by weight and it is waiter service.

General manager Petr Blecha said: “It is great news readers have voted us best restaurant.

“Our chefs make all our food from scratch every morning. It goes straight from the oven to the display or to our customers.

“We’ve recently changed the layout and we are hoping to expand our outside catering – it is an exciting time.”
