Why we vote

NB Fowler asks why we need a General Election (Letters, February 3).

In 1997 Britain had one of the healthiest economies in the developed world. We were promised no more boom or bust, but we got the bust.

The country now owes money at levels unprecedented in modern times.

Our armed forces are stretched to breaking point. Our men and women are performing heroically but it is now known that, as Chancellor, our Prime Minister took a hatchet to defence spending.

We have uncontrolled immigration leading to strife and a surge in support for the BNP.

We were promised a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

I suspect NB Fowler thinks in a similar manner to Gordon Brown. Both dread a vote and the likely outcome.
