Travellers don’t deserve the bad reputation they’re given

After reading Rebecca Evans’ article (The Argus, March 11) on travellers, I actually thought how nice it was for someone to say positive things about them instead of the constant negative comments they receive.

I live fairly near their site at Black Rock and in between them when they are at the Race Hill. Over the years, because of my place of work and some of them being customers of mine, I am on friendly terms with them.

I see the same people year in, year out and have watched their children get older (who, may I add, are always pleasant and don’t grunt like some kids).

We exchange pleasantries and when I bump into them outside my workplace, a smile and a hello is always passed both ways.

In all walks of life there are good and bad, friendly and moody, big houses and small, so don’t judge people on their accents, where or how they live.

I love to see the travellers at Brighton Marina with their horses and dogs. I got talking to some of them and they are really nice people.

I wish people would leave them alone. They take over the car park but that then houses 25 families, instead of a few cars in the car park.

I am a pensioner stuck in a nasty, noisy flat in a high-rise block. I envy their way of life and I would rather have them as my neighbours any day. God bless them.

have you seen the state of the racecourse again, causing criminal damage breaking in and leaving all their dirty rubbish strewn everywhere. if they were that nice they would use the dedicated site contribute and look after the place.

They invaded Patcham Place some years ago. It was a week or two before they were evicted. During that time they denied people the use of the cricket pitch and threw their rubbish including bottles and dirty nappies into the woods.
I collected bags of bottles myself because I couldn't see Council workmen bothering to comb the undergrowth.

I refuse to generalise about travellers, or for that matter any group of people. Everyone should be treated individually. I found this thread by searching for anything about the current group of travellers down at Black Rock. I have to say that sadly, on this ocassion, the group currently living there do seem to be causing trouble with people being intimidated, I myself was harassed by a group of kids, and anti-social behaviour.
