Saltdean developments

The proposed development plans for the Saltdean Lido site (The Argus, March 12), presented by Dennis Audley, are of great concern to Saltdean residents.

Many who attended an initial presentation on March 11 felt that insuffient information was available.

Liz Lee and myself, during the course of the afternoon, convinced Mr Audley of the need to host a public meeting at which he will provide a three- dimensional model which will give local residents a far clearer impression of the scale of proposed development.

Without being complacent, we should remember that Mr Audley has suggested various schemes for the site that have never been progressed.

I’m sure many will agree with the comments of Liz Kempshall, secretary of the Saltdean Community Association (SCA), that “we would very much like to see the lido restored to its former glory”.

I share the concerns of many about the scale of potential development, the loss of the swimming pool and the need to ensure that adequate provision is provided for community facilities that reflect the present and future needs of a population undergoing major demographic change.

This building should be preserved as a swimming pool. It is sadly underused and is part of our architectual heritage. Surely, this is a case where the council should step in the keep this building and pool running. Much more could be done with the right management.

If Saltdean residents were that bothered, they could try supporting the Lido by using it.
