Loss of Art House would be a blow to our city’s cultural core

4:42pm Thursday 18th March 2010

Baffled, shocked and disappointed – none of these words are sufficient to describe how many must be feeling on hearing the news that the University Of Brighton is to suspend its Art House courses (The Argus, March 12).

Surely an institution such as this must have some awareness of how valuable it is to Brighton and the cultural life of the city. As a previous student, I have benefited hugely from the high standard of tuition available.

Also, by withdrawing from its role in the community the university will become a much more isolated and unwelcoming proposition and I am sure this closed doors policy will effect how people feel about and attend its cultural events.

Art and education are integral parts of a successful community and the loss of Art House will be felt throughout Brighton and Hove.
