Recycled fur perpetuates the wearing of fur-based products

I can’t believe Beyond Retro’s argument for selling vintage fur (The Argus, August 10). I think they are very naive in distancing themselves from the “modern fur trade”, using recycling as justification.

They can easily choose to refuse fur items when they buy their stock: the volumes they carry gives them enough buying power to do this.

Marketing it in their shops says it’s OK to wear it, which promotes the whole trade and makes it “normal” when it isn’t, it’s heinous.

In essence they are recycling fur, but the fur trade is so awful, why would anyone want to condone the wearing of it?

The average person on the street doesn’t know where your fur-trimmed coat has come from, so it’s irrelevant whether it’s recycled or not.

If it’s visible, it becomes normal and people become desensitised to the reality of its provenance. What next?

"What next?

An elephant foot ashtray?"

I think you'll find that an elephant foot is a little large to be used as an ashtray, may I suggest you use it as an umbrella stand instead?

Well said Zena.Fur is fur whether vintage or new and should be banned.

Does this include leather & shagreen? Or do we use oil-based synthetics that cause more harm to the environment to produce?
I do not agree with "trophy" wearing or fur-farms but understand that as a consequence of slaughtering a cow for beef, there is a hide which should be used rather than wasted. Same with fish & other animals which are eaten.

The better option may be to have a moratorium on older furs & then have an accreditation system for ethical ones that are by-products of another industry? I believe that a similar system operates with ivory & although is not perfect & open to abuse, is better than the current free-for-all?

I agree with comments made by mtmoocher.
While I do not condone some practices used by the present fur trade, I think it is wasteful to just throw away old furs.
I doubt most people can even tell the difference between fake and real fur at a glance anyway, and high street shops sell fake fur, surely that is also normalizing it too?

I think people need to get a little more detailed than just "banning the wearing of all fur". You can buy rabbit to eat in butchers and supermarkets, it would seem a waste to not use the fur as well.

What is a waste is killing and eating animals. It is a waste of resources, a waste of energy and most of all a waste of protein, as it takes one ton of grain to produce one ton of meat.

Don't dissociate yourself from the suffering inflicted on animals who are needlessly slaughtered to feed you.
