Cruel racing

ONCE again there has been carnage at the races at Aintree.

How much longer can we, a so-called animal-loving nation that raises its hands in horror at activites such as bull fighting, condone this cruelty?

Anyone who supports horse racing is saying it’s all right for such creatures to be killed each year – as long as people are getting rich from it.

Let’s call on the RSPCA to take a stand against the Grand National. Although other races are to blame as well, the meeting at Aintree kills more horses every year.

Another bleeding heart letter attacking a sport enjoyed by many. The racing industry is the 2nd best attended sport in the nation, enjoyed by everyone from unemployed to royalty. It is also the 5th biggest industry in the country. No-one wishes to see a hore die or sustain a serious industry but the bond between horse & human goes back to very early times & the post-career care & humane policies are second-to-none. The problem this year appears, prima facie, to be a human error. The expected rain did not arrive, meaning that the going was good to firm & resulted in the fields going at too great a speed for the obstacles & conditions. One young jockey, Peter Toole, can bear testament to this. (Best wishes to him for his full recovery.)
Lessons can be learned but banning racing is not a viable one. Your delusional idea is based on the misguided premise that we are a nation of animal-lovers & that all supporters of horse-racing think that death or cruelty is OK, which we do not. Would you prefer that less thoroughbreds are produced & pampered, resulting in more horses for slaughter & food being intensively farmed?

From the original letter I quote:
"How much longer can we, a so-called animal-loving nation"
Yes, indeed, an animal-loving nation, like our American "cousins": how many dogs and cats are "put down" every year by the RSPCA?
Certainly hundreds (nay, thousands) more than have died during the National (19, I believe, since 1987).
Indeed, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) managed to provide homes for just 7 of 2,216 animals rendered to its "Care" during 2010. 2,124 of said animals were "put to sleep" as reported in today's Daily Telegraph.
Their reason for this (and I quote from a spokesperson):
"It's a societal problem. We're not going to turn our backs on these animals just so that our figures look good. We're not saying that all the animals we euthanise are suffering from incurable conditions. But overpopulation is a crisis. It's a matter of actually finding a good home."
Racehorses are better looked after and more loved by their owners, trainers, stable staff etc. than thousands of household "pets".
