United Sussex

LONG before England came into existence, Sussex was a kingdom in its own right. With talk of a referendum on the issue of Scottish independence, I thought it might be fun to ask readers of The Argus how they would vote, if given an opportunity, to take part in a referendum on independence for Sussex. How would you vote?

Ohh a subject dear to my heart. Yes indeed Sussex was a kingdom long before modern conglomerates like England ever existed and yes, I think we should rise up and throw off the English yoke. Independence for Sussex now!

On a more serious note I'm actually quite happy being English. I didn't like the regional assembly plans the last Labour government had as I thought it was England being divided up against itself. So despite my fuirst paragraph I'd actually vote against an independent Sussex!

Well I wouldn't necessarily vote for an independant Kingdom of Sussex, but..on a very serious note..I would certainly vote for the abolishment of i) Brighton & Hove unitary authority and ii) East and West Sussex County Councils.

To be replaced with a 'Sussex County Council' unitary authority that governs all towns, cities, and villages within the county boundaries. Towns such as Worthing, Hove, Brighton, Hastings etc would be free to set up their own locally elected town councils to take charge of very local affairs, whilst leaving all the labour-intensive and higher level council functions to the new Sussex unitary authority.

This is what happened with the likes of Cornwall, West Berkshire, Rutland etc. Not only would this allow a reduction of the various layers of local government, it would make for a HUGE cost savings and greater efficiency.

It would also spell the final nail in the coffin for the unwanted abomination called 'Brighton & Hove'!

Robust arguments here which I in the main agree with, particularly the abolition of these self perpetuating Councils like in Brighton & Hove who appear to ignore the views and wishes of the local community but carry on regardless in pursuit of their narrow-minded political agendas...the current installation of useless cycle lanes in the borough being just one example!
