A relaxed approach to faith is a good thing in today’s dark world

IN RESPONSE to a letter titled “Losing Religion” by WJ McIlroy (The Argus, January 28), in which he says services at Brighton Racecourse are an attempt to attract the religiously indifferent, I would like to add my view.

I am now into my 50s and have seen plenty of organised religion in my time. I went to a Church of Christ the King service at the racecourse a couple of weeks ago as I live on the east side of Brighton and Hove. There was no sign of organised religion at all. I wouldn’t say it was disorganised, but it was relaxed and welcoming. There was no embarrassment about when to sit down, stand up, kneel or suchlike. It seemed to me to comprise very genuine ordinary people living out their faith in a practical and relevant way, with live music and fun activities for children of all ages.

Like WJ McIlroy, I have no time for religion. However, I think faith that transforms people and communities is good news in today’s dark world. It’s because of this that I shall be going back for more.

This is fine but please do not criticise the traditional Church who also do a lot for their local community and who are always there when in times of need like bereavement...I personally know a lot about this subject having lost a daughter at the age of twelve in a car acident in France.

Nicole, I have nothing against the traditional church, so long as it is expressing real faith relevant to real people; such as you encountered. It is the empty shell of religious behaviour with nothing inside that I would happily see the back of. Thankfully, it is churches like that which are dying out. There are growing churches of all types and flavours!

Aquademic...really don't understand just why you people won't use your real names...you make yourselves look ridiculous!

Anyway, good post but totally disagree with the "empty shell" thing...just go to Holland Road Baptist Church tomorrow evening and you'll see what we mean...you'll have a job to get in!
