A NEW 30mph speed limit on Old Shoreham Road between Hove cemetery and Tates garage is fraught with its own dangers. I was undertaken twice yesterday by people who obviously do not know the limit has changed from 40 to 30.

Where are the official circular 30mph signs? The red signs advising a new limit is in place are not enough – undertaking is extremely dangerous and can cause horrific accidents. I appreciate the implementation for safety’s sake, but without better signposting it is distinctly dangerous.

Maybe you should keep to the left when you're driving instead of hogging the outside of the lane. Drivers that try and act as de facto traffic police by driving on the outside to prevent people overtaking are far more dangerous in my opinion.

Try and pay attention. If she was driving to the limit, it doesn't matter what land she was in does it? No-one should have been going any faster.

There should be a sign though - I sort of noticed that the old 40 sign had gone and I guessed we are all now supposed to "default" to 30 because it's built-up area and there are no signs to the contrary. But alot of people aren't going to "get" that. Salty Pete's gonna struggle for a start!

It certainly does. The last time I looked at the Highway Code it clearly stated you should be in the inside lane unless you are overtaking

yup, should always be in the left hand side lane. I sense Andy R may intentionally wind others up by sticking in the outside lane :(

The could have a full stop after the word "up". Then again I understand he is a union mandarin

Yeah, I would have thought that Andy R would keep to the left, as it comes so natural to him.

keep left unless overtaking. that is, of course unless your lane is moving faster than the other, or you are on a slip-road. i'm sure that this stretch of road has been 30 for a while, certainly from at least halfway down the dip, before the fire station exit. there is quite often a speed camera a bit further along towards brighton, just before currys! if you ignore limits and get caught, no sympathy from me!!!

I really think that the writer should do two things. 1. Go to Specsavers as there are signs at Locks Hill that say it is the start of a 30mph limit. 2. Buy a highway code where she will see that it says "If there are street lights present and no signs to indicate otherwise then it is a 30mph limit."

Going east, people who want to turn right to go down Sackville Road sit in the outside lane from the Portlade traffic lights near Sainsbuys.

Going West, people who want to turn right to get on the the by-pass on the Hangleton link sit in the outside lane from Currys.

When the Old Shoreham Road is busy these people are a total nuisance. Often they are going less than the speed limit which means others sometimes undertake. People who want to turn right before these distance junctions cannot get out in to the outside lane as it is clogged and worst of all, when they reach a queue of people waiting to turn right they cut back into the inside lane and then shoot straight back out into the outside lane when they pass the blockage.

Used to work in Bristol/Birmingham/L
eeds and London and have never before encountered such horrendous congestion or road rage motorists and cyclists. The place is a complete nightmare!

My answer to this original letter appears in the paper today 9th Feb entitled wrong undertaking. The writer clearly wasnt happy with my response. Seems by the above comments im not alone. Keep to the left and keep everyone safe!

I think the most likely sign for the author is probably not the one she might have wished for as all the undertakers finally manage to get past her rolling road block...

Actually it does! You have obviously not read the Highway Code either!

'Keep to the left-hand lane unless signs or road markings indicate otherwise or unless you are overtaking'

It is imbeciles like you that are causing the accidents that are necessitating the reduction the Speed limits as you patently cannot handle driving at 40 mph in the correct lane!

I couldnt agree more. However, some drivers will never learn and will always stay in the outside lane no matter what. And of course, they are never at fault!
