Keep the faith

Well, we have read extensively in The Argus that Brighton and Hove is in desperate need of school places.

The addition of another school would certainly alleviate this need.

Faith schools bring a dimension to education which underpins the ethos of the “Big Society”.

Faith schools are good for education and the community.

We must not forget our society was built upon Christian teachings and principles. The further we walk away from the light, the darker it gets.

The dimension that faith schools bring to education is called brainwashing.

Faith schools are not good for the community, they are only good for a certain religious community. They discriminate against people from other religions or none.

Catholics particularly teach against contraception, women in authority and non heterosexual orientation. Their views and teachings are old fashioned, contrary to evidence and the teaching of them unregulated.

We need to save our children from this horribly biased world-view based on superstition, inflicted by fear of hell and damnation.

I am afraid you are spouting nonsense & displaying your ignorance.
.
The Catholic Churchdoes not teach against contraception. It advocates a responsible & ethical approach to sex within a set of moral parameters.
.
As for women in authority, why not discuss this with Malvina Sanders, the current headmistress of Cardinal Newman School, one of the largest comprehensives in the country?
.
With regards discrimination against those from other religions, perhaps you may be interested in the excellent work of PACT & other such organisations. On the basis of discrimination, no Catholic may accede the throne so that may one thing to address in your utopian secular society.
The Catholic Church encourages tolerance & inclusion in Society & actively campaigns for a number of causes both in this country & worlwide.
.
Which particular views & teachings are old-fashioned & contrary to evidence? I would be most intrigued to hear of these or is this just an unsupported statement to justify your vitriolic out-pourings?
As to the statement that teaching is unregulated, you are yet again mistaken.
.
You may not be aware of the existing imperical evidence which shows that those within faith-based educational establishments tend to achieve a higher level of attainment than those in state schools. The latest Ofsted report congratulates CNS holistic approach which produces a rounder, more well-balanced individual despite wider problems within its catchment area. This should be something which we applaud & not something to undermine with petty sniping.
.
In conclusion, one should be aware that far from being an out-dated anachronism, the Catholic religion is actually spreading across the world & church attendances have risen. They do not include me in that statistic!

@mtmoocher absolute rubbish.

The only place the RC church will accept sex is within a RC marriage. Abstinence doesn't work. Abstinence teaching is popular in the US and they have the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the world. In the Netherlands where sex and relationships classes start in primary schools they have the lowest rate of teen pregnancy.

Pope Benedict has said that condoms make the spread of HIV worse. Look it up.

Archbishop Francisco Chimoio said that European made condoms were deliberately infected with AIDS.

They say theses things in Africa where people aren't able to be educated and tend to believe the Church. It's cruel. In this country they'd never get away with it so they stick to ranting against homosexuals, in public, and behind closed doors there are many actively gay priests.

Women in authority in a Catholic church? I don't think so. Men are special in worship, women can't do it, it says so in the bible.

All the studies that say faith schools are better (because of their faith) are done by churches. Unless you can quote another source?

Catholic congregations have only risen in this country due to immigration.
In Germany and Holland, people are leaving the church in their thousands.

None of this matters anyway because you can't prove there's a god, let alone the fact that you can know *his* will. The problem with religion is that it always tries to interfere in the lives of those who aren't interested in it. If god wants us to behave in a certain way i'm sure he could pop himself on prime time BBC TV and explain it for himself. That I would like to see.

This faith school proposal seems to have come out of nowhere and yet the application is about to be submitted. I can understand local parents' concerns and opposition. Hove needs more secondary school places but is this the best solution? I am following the debate with interest and certainly feel from what I've seen on Facebook and Twitter (StopKingsSchool) that the D of E should look at other possibilities before making any decision. I believe that some of the parents who are opposing this school would like the opportunity to put forward their own proposal. Now that could be interesting.

However well-meaning faith schools may profess to be they can't but help create divisions where there need be none. Keep religion out of the education system and leave it to parents if they so desire to indoctrinate their kids with their silly myths & superstitions.

That's not the only place they accept sex, as evidenced by how many abuse cases they have covered up. They clearly think that is fine too.
