A rubbish idea

This Green council’s policies continue to flabbergast and astound me. They are bulldozing on with their 3.5% council tax rise, even after The Argus poll has shown that the majority of Brighton householders don’t want it.

Now they are putting out to tender a £500,000 contract to clear illegal traveller sites (The Argus, February 14). To me, this is more or less saying to the travellers, ‘We know you will soon be arriving but don’t worry, we have plans in place to clear your rubbish, leave as much as you like.’ This money would be far better spent visiting these sites and making sure the buildings, posts, fences and gates are totally secure and, where possible, putting up road-type barrier fences and sending a warden round once a week to check them. The sites are well-known: 19 Acres, off Devil’s Dyke Road, 39 Acres, off Ditchling Road, Waterhall, Carden Park, opposite Crowhurst Road, Wild Park, Withdean Park, Stanmer Park, Race Hill and the marina.

Hang on! The Argus poll has not shown anything of the sort!
