Unfair benefits

I know people who work two jobs and earn under £20,000 a year. Out of that must come rent, council tax, utility bills, prescription charges, dental costs and food bills. They also have two children who need to be clothed and fed.

I’m sure they would like £26,000 a year. Why should benefits not be capped? Maybe the benefits system would like to make up my earnings to £26,000 and I could enjoy a stress-free income by doing nothing all day.

A family of 4 with income under £20,000 probably DO qualify for some benefits. They'll be getting child benefit and would probably get tax credits as well. They might get some housing benefit and council tax benefit as well.

Don't believe everything you read in the papers or what grubby politicians tell you.

..in fact...rough calculation...if their earnings (take home) is £20000, their child benefit and tax credit entitlement alone takes them over £26,000 - and that's assuming that they have no childcare costs which they could also claim.

many people can claim benefits, even if they are working, as these benefits are means tested. i earn about £33000, and we were, until recently, entitled to housing benefit. that was before my step-son turned 18. once that happened, the benefit stopped, as he was not regarded as a dependant. so it just shows, even when working, you can still claim. i would hope that the £26000 included any housing benefit, because otherwise it makes sense not to work.

How do single and married people who have no children and are working in lowly paid jobs feel about these amounts?
