I have written to The Argus previously suggesting some of the money made available to bail out the banks should instead be used to provide “green jobs”, employing people to insulate homes, generate renewable energy or build new buses and trains.
Recently, the Government seemed to be making similar noises despite also building new runways at airports and subsidising the purchase of new cars.
Therefore, I was both horrified and inspired by the local BBC news on Monday which reported that hundreds of workers making wind turbines on the Isle of Wight have occupied their factory to stop it being closed down.
I was horrified because surely it is insane for the Government to pay people dole money to be idle when they are desperate to produce planet-saving machinery.
But I was inspired because, as a trade unionist myself, it is great to see ordinary people standing up for themselves and their right to work.
I hope to see many local trade unionists and environmentalists giving support to these workers.
If we can bail out the bankers, surely we can bail out the planet?
