The Woolgar family

Helen Shipley emails: "I am trying to find descendants of Charles Thomas (often just Thomas) Woolgar and his wife Harriet, nee Sturt. They married in Brighton in 1860. He was from Horsted Keynes and Harriet was from Dorking. They lived in the Hove and Portslade area for many years and had nine children.

"Charles Thomas was a merchant seaman for some years then operated boats from Hove. He started a business partnership, Woolgar and Minall, Boat and Bathing Machine Operators, which probably combined fishing, too. Both his sons (Henry, 1868-1957, aka Harry, who married Amelia Humphrey and John b1874) worked with him in later years and they were well known in Hove from about 1900 onwards.

"The couple's second daughter, Annie, 1862-1929, married Thomas Banks and they are my great-grandparents - Thomas started Banks florists, based at 40 Church Road, Hove.

"Charles Thomas and Harriet seem to have separated in the 1890s and Harriet ended her life in Steyning Union workhouse at Shoreham but I have not been able to find out why this happened from the records.

Harriet died in 1913 and Charles Thomas married again in 1917, to Rebecca Hammond. He died in Bloomsbury in 1923.

"This picture is of Charles Thomas in his later years.

"I would love to find out more about the family.

Any information would be very welcome."
