Fish fun time on Brighton beach

11:16am Saturday 24th May 2008

Brighton beach these days is packed with people but as this picture shows, many years ago it was full of boats.

The fishing fleet has gone to the marina and the fish market into the city from their traditional place between the piers.

But a fishing quarter and museum was established in the 1990s, thanks largely to the efforts of former councillor Andy Durr.

Each May there is a revival of the old mackerel fair and the ancient ceremony of blessing the nets.

This year these will take place tomorrow from 12.30pm. Fish, especially mackerel, will be on sale and there will be music all afternoon.
