A rare treat

1:59pm Monday 23rd June 2008

This publicity poster was for the Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway, known to all Brightonians as Daddy Long Legs.

It was produced by that peerless inventor Magnus Volk and started running at the end of the 19th century.

Advertised as A Sea Voyage On Wheels, it travelled from the Kemp Town station of Volk's Railway to a pier at Rottingdean.

The fare was sixpence each way.

Progress could be slow at high tide but the journey was a unique experience with the car running on rails fixed to the sea bed.

The railway had to be abandoned when groynes were lengthened but Volk instead extended his original line from Kemp Town to Black Rock.

It is still there today.

This postcard, produced by the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, was sent in by Terry Sinnott.
