Boxes of produce are piled up in Bartholomews by Brighton town hall in this undated postcard.
This was the traditional area for markets in Brighton and accounts for the name of nearby Market Street.
The town hall was built on the site of old market buildings and replacements were erected nearby in the 19th century.
Councillors approved a reconstruction of market buildings in 1900 in distinctive red bricks. They remained until 1938 when the market moved to Circus Street.
Their site was used as a car park until 1984 when Bartholomew Square and new offices were built. Now the Circus Street market itself is scheduled for redevelopment.
The photograph is taken looking west towards Prince Albert Street. It was sent in by Terry Sinnott of Brighton.

From the village of Horsted Keynes, this walk heads eastwards to encircle the nearby settlement of Danehill, crossing and recrossing two well-wooded valleys before returning along part of the Sussex Border Path, a longdistance walking route which sticks fairly closely to the boundary between East and West Sussex.
