Protesters at a university have become the latest to pitch tents to protest against Israel's assault on Gaza.

Dozens of students stood and chanted around tents pitched at the University of Sussex's Library Square this afternoon.

The camp follows other similar protests taking place at universities across the UK and internationally.

Multiple tents were set up in the centre of the university campus this afternoon as other protesters surrounded the camp waving flags and holding placards.

Protesters said in a statement that they were demanding the university discloses details of its investments and called on the institution to divest from companies linked to Israel.

The campers also called for investment to support Palestinian students, protect their right on campus for freedom of expression and to fly the Palestinian flag over Sussex House.

The protest follows a similar encampment by the side of Lewes Road which protested against the L3Harris arms factory in Moulsecoomb. That camp packed up a fortnight ago.

A University of Sussex spokeswoman said: "The University has a foundational commitment to academic freedom and freedom of speech within the law and is committed to an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.

"In light of this we respect students' right to engage in peaceful and non-disruptive protest. We ask those students who are protesting not to cause disruption or disturbance to other students at this vital time in the academic year nor to interrupt the wider work of the University.

“The University will not tolerate any expressions of antisemitism or any form of racism."
