FATBOY Slim has thrown his support behind the campaign to save the Madeira Terrace.
The adopted Brightonian is now calling for others to follow in his footsteps and pledged to the crowdfunding scheme.
The campaign, set up by Brighton and Hove City Council, aims to reach £430,000 of public donations by November 30.
By hitting the target, the local authority will have a better chance of applying for larger grants to meet the estimated £24 million cost of redevelopment.
This week the city council hit the halfway mark.
Fatboy Slim, real name Norman Cook, said: “From the first time I saw Quadrophenia, Madeira Terrace has been an iconic part of Brighton to me.
“It means as much to the town as the Royal Pavilion, the piers, the i360, Fatboy Slim and muesli itself.
“It’s a great shame it’s fallen to decay so please get involved with the crowdfunding so we can all help can save it and ensure it doesn’t meet the same fate as the West Pier.”
Council leader Warren Morgan said: “Norman’s support comes at a crucial time and is very welcome. He’s an iconic figure for the city so having his backing for our equally iconic terraces will boost the campaign to a huge audience.
“Public support for the campaign has been brilliant but with less than a month to go now, the clock is ticking and we need to show that this project has widespread backing.
“Once we’ve done that it will unlock further funding opportunities from government and heritage groups.
“There’s a strong will in the city to protect and restore the terrace so I would urge all those who care about this to pledge whatever they can.”
This week the Regency Society pledged £10,000 towards the crowdfunding campaign.
More than 1,250 people have offered donations, including an initial pledge of £100,000 from the council and £25,000 from developers U+I.
The council failed in a bid earlier in the year to gain funding for the project from the Coastal Communities Fund.
That decision led to an accusation from council leader Warren Morgan that the government was “failing to invest even a modest amount in our seafront heritage and tourism.”
