These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake Programmed Cyclical Maintenance (drainage, lighting, signage, inspections and surveys, maintenance and clearance of vegetation, litter picking and clearance, road sweeping, emergency crossing point maintenance, road markings and road studs, electrical loop works, barrier maintenance and clearance of injurious weeds). To obtain a copy of the A23 and A27 Cyclical Maintenance Programme, please contact the Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or email at
The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 1st January 2020.
The overnight closures will be in operation between 20:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).
Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. In such cases less disruptive options will be considered. The Order will come into force on 1st January 2020 and shall remain in force until 23rd December 2020.
During the closures, traffic affected will be diverted using other junctions of the A23 and A27, or by using the M25, A22, A24, A27, A29, A259, A264, A270, A272, A281, A283, A284, A293, A2011, A2038, A2270, A2280, A2300, B2036, B2110, B2114, B2115, B2117, B2118, and various local roads. The diversion routes listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions. The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force.
Access to and from premises accessible from, and only from, the lengths of carriageway to be closed will be permitted under escort. The temporary lay-by closures, bus stop closures, side road closures, slip road, carriageway closures and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works periods.
