A YOUNG man has organised a charity football match this weekend in memory of his grandfather.

Joshua Bonner, 24, organised the game as a tribute, raising money for Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

He came up with the idea after his grandfather David Geddes died in January aged 81.

Joshua said: "He loved football and was really passionate about the work that Chestnut Tree House do. So I wanted to host a football match to raise vital funds for the children's hospice."

The 11-a-side match will take place on Saturday July 24 at Portslade Sport Centre, and Joshua hopes it will be the first of many charity events.

"We want to try and fundraise for different charities every year now in his memory," he said.

"It's a shame that my Grandpa isn't around to see it, but I know he'd be really proud."

So far the match has raised more than £250 for the hospice and Joshua's workplace, One Family, have pledged to match the final amount raised.

Chestnut Tree House hospice cares for children with life-shortening conditions and their families across Sussex and south east Hampshire.

The hospice is based in Angmering and first opened in 2003 as part of the Chestnut Tree Trust and St Barnabus House joint effort to provide care for children suffering from these illnesses.

It currently looks after 300 children and young people up to the age of 19, both at the hospice and in their own homes.

The charity offers assessments, advice and information for children and young adults, specialist short breaks, emergency care and end of life care.

It aims to provide the best quality of life for children and their families, and to offer a total package of practical, social and spiritual support throughout a child's life.

The hospice has said that the care services it offers cost approximately £4.6 million a year and the families are never charged for them, so with a small percentage paid for by central government, it relies largely on donations, volunteering and help from the local community
