A charity which supports young people with learning difficulties has opened a new cafe to provide skills and opportunities to find employment.

Cafe Domenica, opened by Brighton-based Team Domenica, aims to provide essential training opportunities for those with learning disabilities, giving them a gentle introduction to work while building their confidence to prepare them for the working world.

Founder and chair of the charity Rosa Monckton said: “Young people with learning disabilities are marginalised in our society and Covid-19 has only emphasised this.

“We really needed a new opportunity for our candidates to replace the lost training over the last 18 months and to become more involved in our great community. Cafe Domenica is just what they need. Without these experiences, many would struggle to build the skills needed to find work.”

The cafe opened today (August 3) at the co-working space Plus X on Lewes Road in Brighton.

Ross Gieve, location director at Plus X Brighton said he is thrilled to be welcoming the charity.

“The variety of forward thinking, innovation driven companies within our building require plenty of brain fuel and who better to provide that then the Cafe Domenica?

“Through this partnership, we are helping provide opportunities for those that are all too often marginalised.”

The cafe will be open every weekday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, serving an array of healthy nutritional foods, sweet treats and Team Domenica’s own brand of coffee.

The charity had teamed up with Brighton Dome at the height of the pandemic to run its foyer cafe and continue to provide its services; this will come to an end at the end of this month.

Their other cafes in Preston Road and at Hove Library remain open.
