Lewes to Patcham

Starting from Lewes, this linear walk by Ben Perkins climbs to head west along the ridge of the Downs, passing an exceptional viewpoint at Blackcap. It then turns south across rolling downland, passing through High Park Woods to finish at Patcham on the northern outskirts of Brighton

Southease to Lewes

After an initial climb, this linear walk from Southease by Ben Perkins follows the South Downs Way steadily up Beddingham Hill before descending a fine terraced bostal path only recently made available for public use. The shorter walk ends at Glynde after five miles but the full ten-mile trek takes you up and over Mount Caburn and down into Lewes

Burwash circular

Centred on the hilltop village of Burwash, this walk by Ben Perkins descends northwards into the valley of the River Rother before traversing higher ground and dropping down again into the more secluded valley of the Dudwell, one of the Rother’s main feeder streams. The final leg of the walk passes close to Bateman’s, Rudyard Kipling’s former home, now a National Trust property

Rushlake Green circular

Three small villages on the southern slopes of the High Weald feature on this walk by Ben Perkins linking Rushlake Green, Warbleton and Vine’s Cross, each with a well-placed country pub. The landscape between is a rich mix of small fields and woods, interspersed by iron-coloured streams converging southwards to form the headwaters of the Cuckmere River

Denton circular

Starting from Denton, near Newhaven, not far above sea level, this substantial walk by Ben Perkins follows good paths and tracks traversing open downland and including two miles along the South Downs Way where height is gained effortlessly to reach the rewarding summit viewpoint on Firle Beacon

Isfield circular

Starting from Isfield, this walk by Ben Perkins explores the low-lying landscape of the upper Ouse valley, following a short segment of the River Uck, one of its main tributary streams. It is a level walk, mostly along good paths, but may be muddy underfoot or even flooded in places after heavy rain

Salehurst circular

Starting from Salehurst in the valley of the River Rother to the east of Robertsbridge, this walk by Ben Perkins heads south across higher ground, descending briefly into another valley formed by the Glottenham Stream, a tributary of the Rother, before returning via John’s Cross

Wadhurst station circular

This is the second of a linked pair of walks by Ben Perkins, following the Sussex Border Path as it passes through some of the best of the High Weald. Today’s circuit follows a fairly strenuous and varied route from Wadhurst Station, traversing high ground as well as dipping to cross several small streams

Chiddingly circular

Until fairly recently this walk from Chiddingly in the Low Weald would have been impossible to complete. The footbridge at point 3 had been missing for many years and much of the route was unsigned and difficult to follow. It is still a bit of an adventure, as Ben Perkins finds out, notably between points 3 and 4 where the path is usually ploughed out and through the aptly named Boggy Wood

Sussex Border Path

This is the first of a linked pair of circular walks by Ben Perkins exploring the Sussex Border Path as it traverses some of the best of the High Weald. Today’s walk starts from Boarshead, north of Crowborough, and passes through Eridge Old Park, home to more than a thousand wild deer
