Police cordoned off a street in Hove after a resident discovered a live Second World War mortar bomb.
A gardener unearthed the mortar at 2pm on Saturday in a backyard in Rowan Avenue, Hangleton.
He carried the device to the front doorstep before calling the police.
Rowan Avenue was closed by police and buses had to be diverted while an Army bomb disposal unit inspected the device.
At 4.30pm the team confirmed it was a live bomb and took it away to destroy it, allowing the road to be opened to traffic again.
