A stunning and unique Grade II Listed house and attached cottage, Penns House & Cottage were formally two properties that were believed to have originally been built in around 1540. The House was historically used as a Quaker Meeting House and there is a wall plaque dated 1678 to coincide with its use for meetings and marriages and where it is also documented that William Penn preached here. The building also has evidence of escape tunnels and priest holes as part of its rich history and it has been written about in several books conveying Steyning's history.

In 2006 the current owners of the cottage were fortunate to be able to buy the house adjoining and were able to create one large adaptable dwelling and have spent a lot of time and love to create a stunning home.

It therefore now occupies just over 0.3 acre, a stone's throw from the end of the High Street and with beautiful landscaped garden plus a private driveway leading to off-street parking for several vehicles. The house still retains two entrances and has three staircases creating a unique and flexible space.

The kitchens were merged to create a large triple aspect room with Paula Rosa fitted modern units and Travertine tiled floor. There is also a gas fired AGA and integrated appliances including a further gas hob with oven below and extractor, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. There are double doors leading to a covered Mediterranean style seating area perfect for al-fresco dining through the year.

The dining room features exposed beams and an impressive fireplace reputed to include old ship's timbers and with a Vigilant wood burner. Double doors lead into the main reception room which was formally the Quaker Meeting Hall, with period doors plus windows to three sides to create a light and airy space. The room boasts a high ceiling of over 10 ft (3m) with exposed wall timbers and a staircase leads up to a guest bedroom. This wonderful space is hard wired for TV and audio and, although large, is also a comfortable space for families or parties.

On the other side of the building is a smaller living room with even more character. This room also has exposed beams and a modern Morso multi-fuel burner and again is triple aspect. This is currently the cinema room and so has cabling for surround sound. Below this room is the cellar which has light and power and is perfect for wine storage maintaining a constant temperature. The walled up escape tunnels are understood to have radiated from here.

Two staircases lead up to separate sets of bedrooms and there are bathrooms on each floor.

The main bedroom has a walk in wardrobe and further storage and a small ornamental fireplace. In total there are 7 rooms although it lends itself to be 5 bedrooms comfortably.

The gardens are extensive and are landscaped into various zones and areas. There is a large lawn to the South although part is currently given over to chickens and there is a central thatched hut suitable for dining. Steps lead up to a raised deck with mature borders and planting, on this level is the Koi pond which at over 35,000 litres with pump house and bead and vortex filtration is a serious feature. The mature Koi are thoroughbred and would therefore remain. A lower deck houses the Sundance Maxus 880 hot tub which is secluded and private from the rest of the garden. Around the other side of the house is an area reached by a bridge with sleeper beds and mature planting. There are many external buildings all with power and light used for storage and workshops including a brick store that could be an office and a w/c. The garden is illuminated by both security and mood lighting while three water features create a peaceful ambience.

Although old, the house has been updated with a modern Worcester Bosch 440 condensing boiler installed in 2017 and updated consumer units.

This outstanding house is a treasure, it has history and character but is also a lovely home in the centre of the town.
