A FORMER church and a care home are among the most recent properties to be sold at auction.

The Church of the Assumption of St Mary the Virgin in Church Farm Lane, East Wittering, was sold for £191,000 freehold last week at an auction held by Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers.

Auctioneers say that while the church had not been used for worship for some years, it is an “attractive historic building retaining many original features, including the main door, tiled floor and windows”.

Senior auction appraiser and auctioneer Richard Payne said: “This rare opportunity to acquire a Grade II listed former Anglican church dating back to the 12th century was too good to resist.

“Our bidders could see the potential in this medieval property, with Victorian restorations, which we considered suitable for a variety of uses, subject to all necessary consents being obtainable.”

Hillersdon Court, a former care home in College Road, Seaford sold for £716,000 when it went under the hammer.

The property, which has residential conversion consent, is situated just off the main A259 coastal link road between the town centre and the seafront.

Mr Payne said: “We felt that this property, on a site extending to 0.05 hectares (0.13 acres), would prove popular.

“Although we are not aware of the purchaser’s intentions, we do know that there is standing planning consent for conversion into three flats and two houses on this detached former care home, comprising three interconnecting properties arranged over two floors.”

Clive Emson Auctioneers holds auctions eight times a year offering specialist advice for auction purposes with offices in Brighton.

The next auction is on Wednesday, September 22 and entries close on August 30.
