BRIGHTON is the third most expensive city in the UK for students to rent, behind London and Oxford.

A study by Zoopla looked at the ten cheapest and most expensive cities for students to rent, and saw Brighton landing in third place with an average rent per calendar month (pcm) of £1,369.

Brighton, which has two universities, was just behind Oxford at £1,379 and a few hundred pounds behind London at £1,549.

Brighton has over 30,000 students studying at The University of Brighton and University of Sussex.

The city is often to referred to as ‘London-by-the-sea’ – despite this term which originated from the arrival of George IV in the 18th century, it could also be used accurately when referring to Brighton’s London-like rent prices.

A spokeswoman for Zoopla said: “With a student population of nearly 400,000 and 40 different universities to choose from, it’s no wonder that student digs are competitively priced in London.

“But at £1,549 a month for the average rental, students will need serious savings, a trust fund, or a high paying job to rent in London.

“Almost as pricey is Oxford, home to one of the oldest universities in the world, where prices average £1,379 a month.”

Just behind Brighton is Cambridge and Bristol, which come in at £1,241 and £1,074 pcm respectively.

Meanwhile, the cheapest places to rent are Hull at £495, Sunderland at £500 and Bradford at £527 pcm.
