FANS of RuPaul’s Drag Race are in for a treat this March, when season nine champion Sasha Velour sashays into town.

Brighton is just one of nine cities in the UK that the drag queen will perform her critically acclaimed “one-queen show” Smoke And Mirrors.

Going from global drag superstar to theatre artist, Velour’s highly anticipated show follows sold-out dates in London and New York, where it was described by the New York Times as “an inventive, surprisingly openhearted show… expressionist performance-art illustration.”

Smoke And Mirrors combines drag, theatre, visual art, magic and personal storytelling.

Velour “explodes into rose petals, vanishes in a puff of smoke, saws herself in half, conjures a rainstorm and even transforms into a tree”.

Promoters say it is “a spectacle that must be seen to be believed”.

Velour, a gender-fluid drag queen who entered the international stage after winning the Emmy-winning reality TV competition, is also the creator and director of the acclaimed drag revue Nightgowns, which she has produced in New York, London and Los Angeles.

It has now been adapted into an eight-part docu-series for the new streaming platform Quibi. Velour has pioneered the use of projection mapping in lip-synch drag performances and is known for combining emotional pathos with theatrical stunts. In 2018, Velour spoke and performed at The Smithsonian’s The Long Conversation among the world’s leading cancer surgeons and NASA scientists to share how the power of drag can provide optimism for the future. Expect Smoke And Mirrors to be a uniquely spectacular night of drag.

Sasha Velour: Smoke And Mirrors is at Brighton Dome on March 4 at 8pm. Tickets are £35.75 to £82.50 from www.smokeandmirrorslive.com.
