“Walkin’ down that old country lane, drops of rain. Call upon the ones who call your name.”

Such lyrics you would expect from a mature ageing singer-songwriter with the weight of the world on their shoulders, not an 18-year-old from Nottingham. But Jake Bugg is full of surprises.

Ever since bursting on to the scene last summer, he has progressed from playing in front of a few dozen people at Brighton’s Great Escape to more than 1,600 people in a sold-out Brighton Dome Concert Hall.

Accompanied by a bass and a drummer, the stage was simple and just right for a young man whose songs do all the talking.

Numerous guitar changes in the set list perhaps showed his immaturity as a performer, as well as the limited song choice from a singer with only one album to date.

As expected, his hit songs Lightning Bolt and Taste It sparked the biggest amount of foot-tapping and shoulder shaking. But it was when the teenager stood there with his acoustic guitar in hand that the lazy but literal comparisons with Bob Dylan emerged.

Tracks such as Country Song and Someone Told Me highlighted his simple guitar picking while giving room for the husky, broken, bourbon-infused voice.

Quite whether Jake Bugg has the stamina for a career as lengthy as Dylan only time will tell. But on this performance he certainly has the shy but assured charisma to give it one hell of a shot.
