The self-dubbed Godfather and grubby conscience of British country music, Hank Wangford has been playing to crowds across the country for decades.

Now in his 70s, there is no sign that this entertainer, who in real life is a qualified doctor, is ready to hang up his strings just yet.

Even on a cold and damp evening in the Spiegeltent, Hank and his trusty band poked fun at even the darkest moments in life.

Racism, divorce, break-ups – Hank covered them all in an amenable style which had those with darker minds laughing away.

Dressed in a sharp blue suit, Wangford’s smooth voice shone over the mellow and sliding accompaniment.

Joined by the sharp-witted Brad Breath (aka Andy Roberts) on guitar, Jerry Rulf on bass, and pedal steel maestro BJ Cole, the musicianship was out of the top drawer.

But it was at its silliest moments that the most fun was to be had.

From the self-made shrine to a honky-tonk legend to a yodelling song written especially for 2013, the year of the yodel, this was not just top music but great entertainment.

Then there was Rhythm Chicken, a song made up entirely of poultry noises. All in all, it was a toe-tapping, thigh-slapping show which warmed the souls of even the bleakest cowboys and cowgirls.
