Last year, electro-pop outfit Chvrches burst onto the music scene with hit single Lies. Ever since, hype has been building around the Glasgow trio. They were shortlisted for the BBC Sound Of 2013 and have been awarded praise by genre-queen Grimes.

Playing to a packed crowd in Digital, the performance was underwhelming considering the praise.

Lies aspired to driving electronic soundscapes but the synth-heavy track just came across as tinny and lacking in melody.

Lead singer Lauren Mayberry was hardly helped by the venue’s sound system. Her vocals, even though they were heavily accented, recalled Robyn or Bjork. Unfortunately, the sound man struggled to frame her voice;  she was barely audible on the opening song and was overwhelmed throughout by the sounds of synth and bass.

Not that a small group of loyal support seemed to mind. Fans swayed along as green lasers strafed among the crowd.

Chvrches had clearly hoped to bring an electro-pop rave to Brighton. Disappointingly, the band’s synth-distortion and booming bass lacked the pop melodies to make the audience dance with carefree abandon.

With only a smattering of singles to their name, the band still have the time and backing to build on the goodwill and create hits to live up to the hype.
