Burn The Curtain’s The Adventures Of Don Quixote By Bicycle was bonkers, bizarre and brilliant. The faces of confused-looking walkers out for a bracing walk on the Downs said everything you need to know about the show.

The sight of 30 people riding around Devil’s Dyke following Don Quixote and Sancho Panza as they pedalled horsicycles – wonderfully designed and well-customised bikes turned into horses – was just too much for some. They stopped, took photos and looked completely bemused.

Contrary to popular belief, some people have no idea Brighton Festival is on. But no one who helped the duo fight windmills, ride to the moon or duel in a shark pit cared.

We spent 30 minutes saddling up our steeds before departing for an hour and a half’s adventure for the sake of it – just like the fictional Spaniards, indulging the aimless art of cycling out and with the countryside as our set – the theatre curtain burned to dust.

To go with the innovative storytelling, there were gags for the adults and games for the kids.

A highlight was soaking the two explorers with rain (water pistols) and showering them with meteors (plastic balls) as they aimed to prove they could ride the deadliest steed in town to the moon.
