The main challenge with politics is convincing people it isn’t a dry, dull mass of paper-waving, leather chairs and well-dressed idealists racing to the top.

Drawing on his experience as a broadcaster and political columnist (and an urge to do stand-up), Steve Richards was able to bring life to the subject and, in democratic fashion, put some topics out to an audience vote.

He isn’t afraid to occupy the left of centre, praising the recently departed Tony Benn and believing Ed Miliband will come good. He thinks Labour could do well at the next general election but, a true journalist, he came across as impartial when called for, demonstrating his ability to kindle even the coldest of audiences.

Shoreham’s crowd certainly wasn’t cold; it was vocal and prepared to test Richards. There were also predictions among the audience throughout in a Q&A style over who might win the next election, with Richards providing the expert balance.

While the title of this show might indicate he’s trying to bring politics to the masses, there was no diluting the content. The result was a satisfying engagement in current affairs, rigorously explored and anything but boring.
