The versatile punk rockers from Portland put on a unique performance in a marginally disturbing yet thoroughly entertaining way on Friday night.

The DIY attitude portrayed by White Fang created a busy energy that radiated around the room. Swiftly working their way through a worryingly large bottle of tequila, the overarching message slurred in each and every track was clear: to get wasted.

The group’s almost incomprehensible stage presence provided a fair chunk of the night’s entertainment. Seeming blissfully unaware of what was going on, lyrics were chanted hysterically. Building introductions burst into heavy carnage, prompting members to rock out in a typically unconventional way, clambering over each other while peering eerily around the audience before briefly joining the mosh pit that had formed in front of them.

Occasional glimpses of the band’s garage roots shone through, as unforgiving distorted guitar solos accompanied plodding, melancholic bass riffs. This added substance to the irrational lyrics and led to an overall pleasing sound.

The sludgy lo-fi melodies provided more than sufficient material to head bang to and the weirdly engrossing onstage antics added further intensity to the show, topping off an interestingly hazy night at The Hope.
