The banter began to flow as soon as Rory and Philip came on – eager and happy to be in the steaming space vacated a few minutes before by relaxed, intelligent comedy sketch duo Twins.
“Rory has a lovely wife – once a month when her husband’s away,” quipped Philip.
Such (mostly harmless) fun was interspersed with craftily crafted songs. Get Me To the Jungle, for instance, was dedicated to those C-listers desperate enough to take part in any reality TV series.
I Wrote It Too High For My Voice – “originally penned for Barry Manilow, but rewritten for Michael Buble,” said Philip - was beautifully delivered by him on vocals and keyboard, while in The Happy Blues, both paired up to strum out and croon, “woke up this morning and it was nothing but good news…”
Another highlight was a song aimed at young people, which involved couples pairing up, like liking each other and like ending up with the wrong partners – OMG!
After a companionable hour or so, Rory and Philip ran off, only to return for an encore that began, “we’ve run out of songs, so would you kindly go home!” So, feeling more kindly and cheerful than when they came in, everyone, eventually, did.
