The likeable pop rock tunes of The Magic Numbers lit up St George's Church with a night of charming and reflective music.

Their material has matured over four albums, the lyrics and chords striking a melancholy note above the bouncy rhythms.

The set incorporated the lively tunes by which they are best known with later material from new album Alias, creating a pleasurable ebb and flow throughout the gig.

The band created a playful and intimate relationship with their audience and seemed genuinely excited to be playing. Half-way through the set the audience were encouraged to break away from the formal set up of the church and dance in the aisles with the band.

This same collaboration was present in their encore – as the band brought on the support acts with whom they have begun to write music during the tour.

Ren Harvieu had a haunting voice and The Goat Roper Rodeo Band had great close harmonies coupled with a coltish energy.

Michele Stodart also performed a song from her solo album, a stripped down version of The Magic Numbers sound well worth checking out. A great night of music.
