For seven years, The Jim Jones Revue have celebrated rock ‘n’ roll at its most primal.

Rejecting pretty much everything that’s come along since The MC5, the London group can rarely be matched for intensity, or purity of vision.

Sadly, Thursday’s visit came towards the tail end of a ‘Last Hurrah’ tour, marking their departure for the foreseeable future.

It was a typically rowdy, sweat-drenched occasion. Support John J. Presley lit the powder keg with his brooding and bluesy fare.

But the headliners weren’t about to be upstaged, arriving with a ferocious It’s Gotta Be About Me.

All boogie piano, throat-rattling vocals and screeching guitar work, their set was as frenetic as anyone could have hoped. The five-piece aired songs from all three of their records, from the bar-room call and response of 7 Times Around The Sun to the out and out frenzy of Rock ‘N’ Roll Psychosis.

There was no melancholy in this farewell, the room packed wall-to-wall and frontman Jim Jones at his exuberant best. Burning Your House Down proved a highlight.

Gritty, soulful and marked with an almost spiritual fervour, this was a fitting send off. Here’s hoping it’s not forever.
