It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thanks to this feel-good all-singing, all-dancing musical based on the original film of 1947.
Sceptical single mum Doris Walker (Inez Mackenzie) runs the Thanksgiving Day parade for New York department store Macy’s.
She tells her little daughter Susan, (played with apt childishness by Ceris Hine), there’s no such thing as Santa Claus.
But Doris ends up supporting Macy’s Santa Kris Kringle in his attempt to prove in court he is the real one. James Murphy is ideal as the loveable, believable Father Christmas.
The set designs, including Macy’s window displays, are pretty and sparkly.
Musical highlights include Pine Cones And Holly Berries, Plastic Alligators, She Hadda’ Go Back and Toy Ballet in which the dolls in the toy department come to life.
A lot has changed since the original screenplay of course. Doris’s suitor Fred’s (Jay Rincon) outings with little Susan seem dubious by today’s standards especially after Doris tells him to stay away from her daughter. But it’s all innocence: Susan just wants a father and a baby brother.
As the snow falls on the audience it looks like it will come true in this festive suspension of disbelief.
