In my tardiness, I only got to see two songs of Brighton collective Sons Of Noel and Adrian’s set.

Fortunately that was all I needed to confirm what a lot of people already know in this fair city – that the 15-piece performing as a five-piece on Thursday night were not short of ideas.

In fact they showed more in one song than most bands get through in a set - with vocalist and clarinet player Catherine Cardin using her ethereal voice to stunning effect in a track that also found time for ambulance sirens.

Sadly we were denied the chance to enjoy another son of BN1, self-described mild-mannered barman and unsuccessful singer/songwriter Stuart Warwick, because of technical difficulties although check him out on Spotify to see he is unduly modest.

That cancellation meant a 45-minute wait for headliners These New Puritans who were on blinding form. Literally. And deafening in an all out sonic attack on the senses.

At its most extreme, the low-frequency synths and drumming vibrated up my spine and actually made my nose vibrate.

Their ability and sheer scope of their work was astounding but while at their most intense their music physically explored my body, at the end I felt very little had touched my heart and was left impressed but not in love.
