Ex Groove Armada lead singer, Becky Jones, aka Saint Saviour, released her second solo album, In the Seams, in November 2014.
This show was mainly songs from that album and Saviour reproduced the stripped back sound to give an intimate and sublime performance of some very personal lyrics about her childhood.
I Remember set the tone with her lush sweet vocal beautifully expressive as it sat at the heart of everything.
With the help of two female backing vocalists, guitar, bass, drums and her own piano, the one thing missing was The Manchester Camerata Orchestra who appear on other tour dates but were substituted here by synthetic strings.
This did not in any way compromise the 45-minute set, which was received by the small cosy crowd with the same genuine warmth that Saviour herself radiated.
Honesty was the catch word of the evening. Bill Ryder-Jones, Saviour’s producer on Seams plus her lead guitarist, opened the evening with a set mainly from his A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart album.
Again wistful finely crafted and personal songs, sung by a distinctive voice with a hint of Ian McCulloch. In truth there were two excellent headline acts for the price of one.
