Paul Hendy is self-deprecating about his own television career in the show's programme but he's written a terrific panto and cunningly cast current TV star Stephen Mulhern in the leading role.

The Britain's Got More Talent host is a talent himself, striking an instant rapport with the audience, young and old.

Mulhern has a wonderful cast alongside him, including Hilary O'Neill as a deliciously wicked fairy, Carabose, with some neat impressions.

Michael J Batchelor (Nurse Nellie) is a colossus, bigger, louder and funnier than anyone and he terrifies the front row with his version of Katy Perry's Firework.

Mulhern and Batchelor combine for the show's best two sketches: a 97-gag skit on pop stars and an incredible slapstick bathroom scene confined to a 3D set which Mulhern almost falls out of.

Lauren Cocoracchio (Beauty) and Josh James (Prince Michael) harmonise beautifully while broad Brummie King Barry (Ian Smith) and adorable Fairy Moonbeam (Cat Stanton) are also terrific.

Throw in a remarkable special effects dragon and a great ensemble, and The Hawth has a cracker on its hands this Christmas.

I've seen a lot of traditional pantos. This is the best.
