Traditional storytelling it was not, but children loved it all the more.

Storyteller Andy Miller opened his book of fairy tales as excited youngsters who sat at the front on the floor shouted in anticipation: “Is it Goldilocks?”

Shadows of the three bears walked across a screen before a cheeky fox puppet burst through calling “check out my bling”.

Children laughed hysterically as Charlie the naughty fox, operated by Sally Edwards, deviated from the story in lots of silly ways. Charlie threw baby bear’s “disgusting” porridge into Andy’s face much to the audience’s delight.

The bears’ chairs were attacked with a chainsaw and the fox broke Daddy bear’s ipod, after blasting out Blame It On The Boogie, in this thoroughly modern fairy story. Charlie required a lullaby to fall asleep and the audience happily complied with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star before three were chosen to be the disgruntled returning bears as everyone shouted: “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?”.

The comedy was pitched just right for its very young audience, who participated eagerly in the mayhem and queued to stroke Charlie and meet Sally after the show.

This WishWorks production has made a triumphant return to Brighton Fringe.
