About 40 people arrived to find a drum waiting on their seat.
Tuition began almost immediately - with call and response we first learnt drumming patterns, then moved on to sung responses.
We graduated to drumming and clapping (Queen's We Will Rock You was a handy reference point), and eventually attempted to sing drum and clap simultaneously. I think I was not alone in finding that an impossible task.
Participation came easily - Drum Tribe were enthusiastic and humorous and maintained a fast pace throughout. For someone who generally avoids audience participation events, even being asked to sing or drum individual responses felt entirely comfortable.
I was pleased not to have sat on the front row when audience members were invited to dance and take turns to tag others to join them. But there simply wasn’t time to be embarrassed. We were quickly back to learning new responses for a final high-energy burst of drumming and singing.
In an event lasting only one hour, an opportunity to improvise your own drum rhythms was lost to the dancing episode.
And, with only a brief opening and closing performance, I was disappointed not to have heard more of Drum Tribe themselves.
But huge fun.
Four stars
