First it was My Bloody Valentine, then came Slowdive and finally Ride. Even Swervedriver are back on the road.

So it shouldn’t be any surprise that a new gaggle of bands have emerged with their guitar amps turned up high and their feet hovering above the sea of relentlessly blinking LEDs that peer out from their effects pedals.

Cheatahs are at the front of the pack and managed to push the Prince Albert’s PA speakers to their limits, with waves of drowsy fuzz cut through with even louder blasts of distortion.

Typically the band’s vocals were buried in reverb and they didn’t win any prizes for originality. They hardly tried to hide their influences and might as well have turned up in matching ‘I Love Shoegazing’ tshirts.

Cheatahs were at their strongest though when they used that genre’s key, which was to combine seasick guitars, all dipping pitch and overdrive, with strong melodies.

While sometimes simple is best, Cheatahs found their form when utilising samplers and pretty lead lines to complement the incessant squall of guitars.

They’ve still got a long way to go before they can stand alongside those that inspired them, but they’re definitely on the right lines.
