Gazing across the audience as singer Lisa Abbott and a ten-piece band recreated the seminal 1985 album Hounds Of Love in its entirety, it became clear that there is a huge appetite to hear the songs of Kate Bush.
From the ardent fans in the front row flinging their arms wide to bathe in the sound, to the back row of women standing to dance with wuthering arm gestures, to everyone swaying in their seats and mouthing the lyrics, people were passionate about this music.
Some of the sound mix was a little off during the first act, making it hard to hear the string section over the electric guitars and drums, while the pre-recorded sound effects on Running Up That Hill competed with the vocals and violins.
This was resolved by the time the group - featuring members of the Brighton Beach Boys and Stomp’s Lost And Found Orchestra - tackled the challenging Ninth Wave section of the album, with its complex orchestration and wide-ranging soundscapes.
Showcasing tracks from across Bush’s career, Abbott’s versatile voice sounded uncannily similar, howling without inhibition on Wow, while epic tracks such as Breathing and Cloudbusting delighted the ardent fans under the dizzily spinning mirrorball.
