The format of Brighton Philharmonic Society's Sunday afternoon concerts in the Unitarian Church is a 20th century work with a Sussex connection and a well-known classic.
For this concert the 20th century part consisted of Frank Bridge's Three Sets Of Minatures For Piano Trio.
Bridge's music can be divided into accessible and conventional or challenging and modern. These miniatures were accessible and conventional. The earlier of the nine pieces were redolent of the Palm Court, the later more individual and varied. All were immediately attractive.
These received committed performances by pianist Jeremy Young and members of the Bhattacharya String Quartet who were responsible for the classic, Haydn's Emperor String Quartet. The nickname refers to the slow movement which is a set of variations on the Austrian National Anthem which Haydn wrote for his Emperor, the inspiration being God Save The King.
The rest of the Quartet is less serene, but full of verve and fire. Apart from a slight mishap in the last movement, the performance was splendid.
These Summer Concerts provide a most civilized retreat from Brighton's raucous holiday atmosphere. Those thinking of popping along can be assured of interesting programmes and a friendly welcome from the organisers.
