The Three Degrees have been honing their craft for a long time - so long, they hold the Guinness World Record for longest-running female group.
From the moment they launched into Shake Your Groove Thing, their professionalism was obvious. They were very slick: decked out in sparkling gold dresses in front of a monochrome suited band, their choreography was seamless and their theatricality engaging.
They led a tour of disco classics including I’m So Excited and When Will I See You Again, crafting an atmosphere that was both nostalgic and energetic.
The vocalists, Valerie Holiday, Helen Scott and Freddie Pool, still have powerful voices. They involved the entire audience throughout the show with clapping and, when necessary, dance lessons.
The highlight had to be their encore, a version of Boogie Wonderland which ran to almost 15 minutes. This included a long section of call and repeat with the audience and solos from each member of the backing band.
With these musicians behind them, The Three Degrees performed expertly. An eye for the theatrical and an understanding of their audience made for a night of authentic 1970s disco.
