The Ropetackle was packed to the rafters for The Pretty Things’ concert in aid of the victims of the Shoreham Air Disaster on Sunday with the band waiving their fee for the evening.
Founding members, Dick Taylor and Phil May are still the backbone of the band more than 50 years after they met at art college and formed the Things.
They have been joined by Jack Greenwood on drums, George Woosey on bass guitar and Frank Woosey on guitar and harmonica adding to the mix.
The set ranged from some of their hits including Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut to Road Runner and Don’t Get Me Down as well as some classic blues numbers I Can’t Be Satisfied and Little Red Rooster with Taylor on acoustic slide guitar and Frank Woosey on harmonica.
Highlight of the evening was probably Mona with a standout drum solo from new boy, Jack Greenwood – a relative newcomer to the band after just seven years.
It would be no surprise if the band had lost some of its drive but the music remains fresh and the presentation tight and focused. If anything, the sound gets better.
