THIS production by Tucked In was inspired by Steve Keay, who has increased the salmon population of Perth, Scotland, with his salmon hatchery and breeding unit.

The tale follows the activities of a little girl (Lizzie Franks) who helps her father (Philip Bosworth) with their fish nursery, and then accompanies Leaper the salmon on a wild, magical adventure.

Along with puppeteer Robert Welling, the cast of three create a mystical, yet challenging journey for girl and fish before they return home.

Danger ensues; bigger fish, otters, bears and men with a commercial fishing boat are the predators they come up against.

The story highlights the need to protect the oceans. There are some harrowing moments, such as when the swimmers encounter and collect a mountain of plastic carrier bags.

The actors skilfully bring a variety of creatures to life from a delicate octopus to quacking ducks and a child.

Directed by Hal Chambers, the team use light and mirrors to recreate some of the ocean’s iridescent watery magic. This is complemented by enchanting folk music and seaside sounds.

Mostly mimed, the tale was not easy to follow for the very young, but its meaning was profound and resonant.

Tucked In will support the Surfers Against Sewage beach clean in Brighton on April 14.
